THREE SHIPS HIT NEAR HORMUZ AS IRAN LAUNCHES OVERNIGHT MEGA-BARRAGE

Iran launched its most intense overnight barrage yet as three ships were hit near the Strait of Hormuz, the IEA moved to release 100 million barrels in emergency reserves, and reports confirmed new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded on Day 1 of the war.

Three commercial vessels were struck by unknown projectiles near the Strait of Hormuz in the early hours of Wednesday as Iran’s IRGC launched what it described as its most intense and heaviest wave of attacks since the war began β€” a multi-layered barrage that lasted more than three hours and included Khorramshahr medium-range ballistic missiles targeting Tel Aviv, Haifa, and West Jerusalem, as well as U.S. bases in Erbil, Manama, and Bahrain.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported that a cargo vessel approximately 11 nautical miles north of Oman caught fire and its crew evacuated, a bulk carrier was hit 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai, and a third vessel was damaged at a separate location. The strikes come 12 days into Operation Epic Fury with no diplomatic off-ramp in sight. Iran’s foreign minister told PBS News that negotiations with the U.S. are no longer “on our agenda,” calling previous talks a “very bitter experience.” The IRGC issued a direct challenge to the White House’s endgame: “It is we who will determine the end of the war. American forces will not end the war.”

Overnight, powerful explosions rocked a residential district of central Tehran following a massive wave of Israeli air attacks. Iran’s Red Crescent confirmed a residential building was hit, with rescue teams digging through rubble. Iran’s total civilian death toll stands at more than 1,300, with Tehran claiming nearly 10,000 civilian sites have been bombed since February 28.

MOJTABA KHAMENEI CONFIRMED WOUNDED β€” SILENT SINCE TAKING POWER

Multiple Israeli and Iranian officials confirmed Wednesday that new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in his legs on Day 1 of the war and has been sheltering at a secure location with limited communications. The New York Times cited three unnamed Iranian officials. A senior Israeli official confirmed an intelligence assessment to Reuters. The son of Iranian President Pezeshkian posted on Telegram that Khamenei is "safe and sound," calling it a blessing. Iranian state television had previously referred to Khamenei as a "wounded veteran of the Ramadan war" without specifying the injury. Khamenei has not appeared in public, issued a written statement, or given any address since being declared supreme leader on Sunday β€” now Day 4 of his leadership.

IEA MOVES TO RELEASE 100 MILLION BARRELS IN EMERGENCY RESERVES

International Energy Agency is recommending an emergency release of strategic oil reserves exceeding 100 million barrels over the first month, according to two sources with knowledge of IEA discussions. The extraordinary meeting, convened Tuesday, is the most significant coordinated emergency energy action since the COVID-era demand shock. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been routing exports through alternative pipelines, but storage is filling and Gulf producers are preemptively cutting output. Bloomberg estimates roughly 6% of global oil production is now offline. The IEA release, if confirmed, would be the largest emergency drawdown in the agency's history.

MASS IRGC COMMANDER FUNERALS DRAW CROWDS IN TEHRAN

Tens of thousands of Iranians filled Enghelab Square in Tehran Wednesday for the funerals of senior IRGC commanders and military officials killed in the early days of the war. Among those being buried: IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpour, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi, Supreme National Security Council head Adm. Ali Shamkhani, former Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh, and military bureau chief Mohammad Shirazi. The funerals are the most visible public display of Iranian military losses since the war began and underscore the decapitation strike's scope. Iranian state media framed the funerals as a mass act of national defiance.

IRAN THREATENS REGIONAL BANKS β€” WARNS CIVILIANS TO STAY AWAY

The IRGC's Khatam ol Anbia joint command warned Wednesday that Iran would begin targeting economic centers and banking infrastructure linked to the U.S. and Israel across the region, in direct retaliation for a strike on an Iranian bank. Spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari said the "enemy is forcing our hand to target economic centers and banks linked to the US and Zionist regime." In a striking advisory, the IRGC warned civilians in the region to stay away from banks. The threat represents a significant expansion of Iran's declared target set from military to financial infrastructure.

POLITICAL PRESSURE MOUNTS IN WASHINGTON AS CONGRESSIONAL DEMANDS GROW

Political pressure is building in Washington as lawmakers demand public hearings on the war's goals, question the administration's strategy, and probe rising U.S. casualties alongside ongoing civilian strike investigations. Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal raised the prospect of U.S. ground troops entering Iran. No Republican has publicly broken ranks. The Minab school strike investigation remains open β€” the administration has not released its targeting package to Congress. The White House definition of victory β€” unconditional surrender as determined solely by Trump β€” forecloses any negotiated exit and has drawn no response from Republican leadership.

What to Watch For

IEA reserve release confirmation β€” Watch for a formal announcement on the 100 million barrel drawdown. If confirmed, it would be the largest emergency release in the agency’s 51-year history and the most significant near-term lever on oil prices.

Ships hit near Hormuz β€” Three vessels struck this morning. Watch for CENTCOM confirmation of the attacks, vessel nationalities, and whether Iran claims responsibility. A pattern of commercial ship strikes could trigger NATO maritime response discussions.

IRGC bank threat β€” Iran’s explicit warning to stay away from regional banks is unprecedented in scope. Watch for any Gulf state financial sector response or emergency measures from central banks in Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE.

Mojtaba Khamenei β€” Day 4 of silence. Any public appearance or written statement would be a significant signal. Israel has not ruled out targeting him directly.

Congressional hearing demands β€” Watch whether any Republican joins Democratic calls for public hearings on war powers, the Minab targeting package, or the administration’s end-state definition.

Quote of the Day

"It is we who will determine the end of the war. The equations and future status of the region are now in the hands of our armed forces. American forces will not end the war."
β€” IRGC statement carried by Iranian state media, Wednesday morning

Bottom Line

Day 12 opened with three ships burning near the strait the world's oil depends on, an emergency agency moving to release its largest reserve drawdown ever, and a supreme leader hiding wounded in a bunker. Iran's IRGC declared Wednesday morning that it β€” not the United States β€” will decide when this war ends. The administration has no public answer to that claim, no released targeting package, no congressional authorization, and no defined endgame beyond a word β€” "surrender" β€” that neither side agrees on the meaning of.
